You'll Be Sari

The monsoon rains drummed against the windows of the coastal Goa hotel room, casting a silvery haze over the palm-fringed view. Rajesh stretched lazily on the bed, scrolling through his phone, while Sneha rummaged through her suitcase. Her laughter, light and teasing, cut through the patter of rain.

“You know, jaanu,” she said, holding up a pink-and-lilac silk sari, its gold border catching the light, “you’ve been claiming you could drape a sari better than me since we got married. Prove it.”

Rajesh snorted. “Please. I’ve watched you do it a hundred times. It’s just… wrapping cloth, right?”

Sneha’s eyes sparkled. “Oh? Then put it on. Right now. No help. If you fail, you admit I’m the sari queen.”

“Deal,” Rajesh said, snatching the fabric. “But when I nail it, you’re making me masala chai for a week.”

---

Rajesh started confidently. He’d seen Sneha pleat the pallu countless times. But the slippery silk slithered like a rebellious snake. Step 2: The petticoat—he’d forgotten to tie it tight. As he pivoted, the pleats came undone, cascading around his ankles. Step 3: The choli blouse, which he’d mistaken for a towel, strained comically across his broad shoulders.

“Need a hand, shona?” Sneha called from the balcony, voice sweet as mango lassi.

“Almost done!” Rajesh grunted, safety-pinning the pallu haphazardly. He stumbled into the mirror, cringing. The sari pooled unevenly at his waist, one end flung over his shoulder like a lumpy scarf. But he grinned. “Done. Now where’s my chai—?”

The click of the door lock silenced him.

---

Sneha stood in the hallway, Rajesh’s suitcase in hand. His jeans, shirts, and even his flip-flops were stuffed inside. “Looking good, babu,” she smirked. “But you’ll need more than that to go out. Lobby. 15 minutes. My clothes stay here.” She blew a kiss and vanished.

Rajesh gaped at the empty room. His only options: the half-draped sari, Sneha’s abandoned dupatta (now a makeshift shawl), and a pair of her gold-heeled sandals that pinched his toes.

---

The elevator ride was a nightmare. A family of tourists stared as Rajesh shuffled out, the sari’s pleats unraveling with every step. A hotel clerk stifled a laugh. At the lobby fountain, he spotted Sneha sipping coconut water, his suitcase at her feet.

“Looking… authentic,” she deadpanned.

“Give me my clothes,” Rajesh hissed, clutching the dupatta like a lifeline.

“Admit it. You’re the sari disaster here.”

“Fine! You’re the queen. Now can we—”

Sneha tossed him the suitcase. “But you’re my disaster,” she said, softer now. “Now go change. I’ll order that chai.”

---

Rajesh took his suitcase back to his room, but when he opened it, only feminine apparel was inside. It contained not only saris, but also salwar kameez, kurta sets, and lendanges in soft colors and soft fabrics. There were also panties, bras, and of course, petticoats.

Sneha took the next plane home. This was the last time she ever saw Rajesh.

End.
